What you’re looking at
This is the house’s parlor — the more formal of the two pens, where a frontier family kept its best things and received its guests.
Why it matters
In a double-pen dogtrot, one room was the working, everyday space and the other the “company” room. The parlor held the family’s finest furniture, its portrait photographs, and its most important occasions — weddings, funerals, visits from the preacher, and the rare formal call.
What to notice
- Look for the signs of a formal room: the better finish, the mantel, the placement near the front door.
- ▲ Family note: this is the room to fill with the family’s own story — heirlooms, portraits, and the occasions this room has seen.
